Amherst, Mass., UMass Amherst, the flagship campus of the University of Massachusetts system, sits on nearly 1,450-acres in the scenic Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts. For those not familiar with its layout, the college campus can be a daunting place. After several years of planning, phase one implementation of a new wayfinding sign system is being realized.

Wayfinding involves a comprehensive system of signs, landmarks and environmental cues that direct people from where they are to their destination. The new system addresses a longstanding concern expressed by both students and visitors.

Roll Barresi & Associates (Cambridge, MA) was chosen to develop the new wayfinding system. Sunshine Sign was selected to build and install pedestrian and vehicular signage throughout the sprawling campus. Working together, after auditing location points throughout UMass Amherst, a hierarchical system of signs was developed, proposed and accepted by the Facilities & Campus Planning Division of UMass Amherst.

“Sunshine has proven themselves with other campus assignments over the years”, according to UMass Capital Project Manager Burt Ewert. “We are confident that the they will deliver a clearer and more consistent wayfinding experience for our students and visitors”.

Phase one implementation of the wayfinding sign system is due for completion by late summer. This is a bit of good news for teachers preparing for fall classes. Thanks to the new wayfinding system, UMass Amherst students will have one less excuse for being late for class!
